This lesson plan works on adjectives to describe people`s physical appearance.

Description

Students are introduced to adjectives to describe people`s physical appearance through "heroes" theme: warming-up to review previous vocabulary, slides focused on subject explanation, pair work students production game and wraping-up game dynamic to guess heroes involving the whole class. The total time to complete this lesson is 90 minutes.

Student Characteristics

The audience for this lesson plan are 9th grade (or above) students.

Student Group

High-school students. It also requires pop heroes culture (Marvel, DC comics or similar pop heroes knowledge).

Skill and Language Level

  • A1 students (Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.)

Lesson Plan

Knowledge Check

Review previous vocabulary through a game and adjectives.

(15-20 minutes):

  1. Teacher spreads sheets with Stop Game charts;
  2. Teacher builds up a chart to play the game and shouts the letter;
  3. Students fill in the column and say STOP when finish;
  4. Teacher keeps checking previous vocabulary then may review them later if necessary.

Introduction/Warm-up

15-20 minutes:

  1. The teacher will work on a game called Stop Game to review previous vocabulary. 
  2. The game consists on writing a chart with some word categories and space for letters. 
  3. The students receive a worksheet with the same chart. 
  4. The teacher shout a letter and the students have to fill in each category column with words starting with if. 
  5. After finishing all the categories, the student has to shout STOP, then everyone stops playing and the teacher checks the answers. 
  6. Students get two points for each exclusive word and one point for repeated ones. 
  7. In the end the students calculate their points to know the winner.

Guided Practice

20 minutes:

  1. Teacher presents slides with people with different physical appearances. 
  2. Then students repeat the adjectives and related sentences. 
  3. Teacher will hand students a worksheet with sentences to be completed so they can fill in with the adjectives from a box (each sentence comes with a picture).

Independent Practice (or Student Production)

20 minutes:

  1. A pairwork activity in which the students have to draw the suspect. 
  2. In pairs they must write down a short paragraph by describing their suspects’ physically. 
  3. In turns students read their texts in order to the partner draws it and vice-versa. 
  4. When both finish they exchange the drawings to compare their descriptions. The drawings will be presented to the whole class and afterwards they stick on the classroom walls.

Closing Activity/Wrap-up

(30 minutes) “Super Heroes” guessing game. 

  1. Teacher splits the class in two groups. 
  2. Students choose one classmate from their groups to be their representatives. 
  3. Teacher sticks super heroes pictures on the board and tells students that the representatives will stand with their backs to the board. So they cannot see the pictures. 
  4. Teacher points out at one hero picture and the groups have to describe by saying physical adjectives to their representatives. 
  5. Then the representatives have one shot only. The first to say it correctly wins and the group scores a point. 
  6. The game goes on until the time limit of 10 minutes.

Extension and/or Differentiation

  1. Students with difficult may have a variation of the Stop Game:
  2. Teacher writes two letters, instead of one, on the board, so they can complete using words starting with both letters.

Assessment

Informal assessment through Stop Game. The teacher will assess the students by checking their previous knowledge of the vocabulary.
