Lesson Topic: Multicultural Food Customs
Lesson Description:
Students will describe how geography, tradition, and religion influence food customs by researching a country other than the United States.
Learning Goals/Outcomes:
Describe how geography, tradition, and religion influence food customs.
Use cooperative learning strategies to complete a group assignment:
● Research a country other than the United States, their geography, foods produced, food customs, traditions, etc.
● Collaborate as a group and effectively distribute work.
● Finish project with a presentation to the class sharing what they learned.
Nebraska Standards:
HSE.HS.3.25 Analyze influences on food choices.
HSE.HS.3.27 Analyze the effects of global and local events and conditions on food choices and practices.
Teacher Planning:
Equipment/Materials Needed:
○ Student groups
○ Supportive documents for the lessons (rubric, worksheet, countries, etc.)
Time Required for Lesson:
○ 3 - 40 minute class periods + additional class time for presentations
Lab Set-up:
○ Arrange classroom so students (in groups of 4) are sitting in a square. They are shoulder-to-shoulder with one partner, and knee-to-knee with another.
○ Write a list of career-ready skills on the board

Anticipatory Set/Pre-Activity:
○ Students will complete one of the bell work questions:
■ What is a food tradition your family celebrates?
■ What are the five most common foods you eat?
○ They will be given a follow up question:
■ Why does your family celebrate this tradition? Do you know when it started?
■ Why do you eat those five foods most (convenience, what your family prepares, what your friends eat, etc.)?
