Stellar Brightness Formative Assessment
The brightness of stars in the night sky varies. One measure of the brightness of a star is apparent magnitude, which is the brightness of the star as seen from Earth. The distance of stars from Earth also varies and is measured in light years. Figure 1 shows the apparent magnitude of several stars.
Figure 1
Table 1 shows the distance of several stars from Earth.
Table 1
Star | Distance from Earth (light years) |
Sun | - |
Sirius | 8.6 |
Vega | 25 |
Castor | 49 |
DOK Level 1
According to Table 1, what star is 25 light years from Earth?
DOK Level 2
According to Table 1, what is the distance from Earth for the dimmest star shown in Figure 1?
DOK Level 3
Johnny claims that the further a star is from Earth, the brighter the star appears in the sky. Do you agree or disagree with Johnny’s claim? Support your argument with data from Figure 1 and Table 1.
