Fingerplays/Action Rhymes

Ant Ah-Choo!

Five hungry ants marching in a line,

Came across a picnic where they thought they could dine.

They marched into the salad,

They marched into the cake,

They marched into the pepper,

Oh-huh!  That was a mistake – Achooo!  (throw one of the ants away – continue until there are no ants left)

Sneezing Songs

#1

When you cough or when you sneeze,

Will you think of others please.

Use a tissue or your hand,

So on friends your germs won’t land.

#2

I think— I am going to sneeze (ah choo)

I think– I am going to sneeze (ah choo)

If you sneeze, pass the tissue please

Ah Choo

Action Rhyme: “I’ve Got a Cold”
I’ve got a cold (point to yourself)
My nose can’t smell (point to your nose)
My eyes are red (point to your eyes)
I don’t feel well (hand on forehead)
So I’ll drink my juice (pretend to drink)
And go to bed… (fold hands under head)
My nose feels better (point to nose)
And so does my head! (point to head)

Give each child a tissue, and teach this rhyme:
If you are sick
And you must sneeze,
Kindly use your tissue
Please.
Have each child "sneeze," blow his nose, and then throw the tissue into the garbage can.

Five Little Germs Flannel

Five little germs, sitting in a row
The first one said,
"On hands, I like to grow."
The second one said,
"I like to fly in the air."
The third one said, "I don't care."
The fourth one said,
"I travel on a sneeze."
The fifth one said,
"Wash your hands? Oh, please!"
Swish goes the water
Bubble goes the soap
And the five little germs
Down the drain they float.

Every Child Ready to Read Skills/Practices

Sing— The sense of rhythm obtained from listening to songs and rhymes will help your child to identify patterns, like rhyming words, which will help them learn to read. Because songs automatically break down words into smaller sounds through tones, singing with your child is one of the best ways develop early literacy skills.
Talk— Sneeze, sniffle, and sick all begin with the letter “S.”  Talk with your child about things you can find around the house that begin with the same letter.
Read— Sharing stories is a great snuggly activity when children aren’t feeling well, make sure to have plenty of books at home.

Write—Kids write their names on nametags for storytime.
Play—Kids play along to the action rhymes during storytime/sneezing into a tissue, etc.

Possible Asides to Parents & Caregivers

·        Teach your child what they can expect if you have to visit a doctor’s office.  These places are often scary, but the library has plenty of books about seeing a doctor.
