Course Description
This discussion course explores how various characteristics of individual workers, the groups they are part of, and organizational characteristics affect worker productivity. Included are personality and attitude, workgroup norms and makeup, and organizational structure, job design, and leadership.

Learning Outcomes
Apply an understanding of individual and team behavior to promote productivity and positive team relationships in a constantly changing work environment.
Utilize an understanding of the impact an organization's structure and culture has on effectively managing workgroups in creating and sustaining a motivating climate.
Apply effective change management skills to integrate procedural and technological changes within the workforce, while minimizing the negative impact on productivity.
Anticipate and adjust to environmental changes like globalization, increasing workforce diversity, and changes in technology to make effective management decisions.
Utilize principles of effective organizational development to advance career opportunities in management and supervision.

SLaM (Systems Leadership and Management) Praxis is a course is designed to introduce students to the dynamics of strategic decision making in corporate boardrooms through team exercises, simulations, and role playing. The case studies and team exercises will introduce students to strategy choices in the high tech sector, but these learnings are just as valid in other industries. We will also have invited guest speakers from the industry who have lived through difficult corporate situations and can provide insights into the cases discussed in class.

Technology and the Literary Imagination

Our linked subjects are (1) the historical process by which the meaning of technology has been constructed, and (2) the concurrent transformation of the environment. To explain the emergence of technology as a pivotal word (and concept) in contemporary public discourse, we will examine responses — chiefly political and literary — to the development of the mechanic arts, and to the linked social, cultural, and ecological transformation of 19th- and 20th-century American society, culture, and landscape.
Note: In the interests of freshness and topicality we regard the STS.464 syllabus as sufficiently flexible to permit some — mostly minor — variations from year to year. One example of a different STS.464 syllabus can be found in STS.464 Cultural History of Technology, Spring 2005.

"Help from a co-worker is generally viewed as a good thing. But that isn’t always the case. Researchers are exploring an often-ignored form of help that is not always welcomed by those receiving it. It’s called anticipatory help. Anticipatory help is when an employee anticipates the needs of a co-worker and offers or provides help on a task without being asked to do so. That anticipatory help is unsolicited is what distinguishes it from reactive help, which is assisting a co-worker who has explicitly asked for help. According to the team behind the study, a prevailing viewpoint in organizational scholarship is that employees who help their co-workers generally receive positive reactions. But this perspective is based on research that has not deliberately differentiated the outcomes of anticipatory helping from reactive helping..."

"Communication is key to business. If employees don’t communicate ideas or point out problems, organizations can struggle to improve efficiency and offer innovative products and services. That’s why leaders and organizations often encourage workers to voice their ideas and perspectives. If employees speak up and express their ideas and opinions, the thinking goes, then they’re not remaining silent about other problems or concerns. It turns out, that’s not the case. In an Academy of Management Journal paper, researchers analyzed multiple studies involving thousands of employees to understand the link between voice (how often employees volunteer constructive ideas or issues at work) and silence (the extent to which they intentionally withhold ideas or issues). The conclusion was that the two behaviors were virtually independent. The research found that voice and silence are driven by different psychological factors..."

This curriculum is a standardized workplace management curriculum for training entry-level social workers in child welfare agencies in the State of California. The curriculum is composed of nine modules that may be used as separate classes or together in a single course. The modules are constructed to be suitable for three distinct groups of users: BSW students, MSW students, and child welfare agency supervisors and program managers (first and second line supervisors)--and those interested in such positions. Students can study from these sections during their matriculation, while agency employees might be exposed to them via departmental training opportunities, a local child welfare training academy, university extension or concurrent enrollment programs, or continuing education providers.
