The purpose of this resource is to develop an understanding of some of the relationships between soils of different types and water. Students will time the flow of water through soils with different properties and measure the amount of water held in these soils. They will also experiment with the filtering ability of soils by testing the pH of the water before and after it passes through the soil and observing changes to the clarity of the water and to the characteristics of the soil. Students will be able to explore the concept of Earth as a system.

Kai Lenny, a big wave surfer, talks about surfing being his natural high and why he said no to drugs. Surfer of Jaws, Nazare, and Mavericks, Kai says that deciding to use drugs would have prevented him from achieving all he has so far.

Born and raised on the island of Maui, Kai is a product of his environment. From the biggest waves in the world to the smallest swells and the strongest winds, for Kai it’s all about staying in the water and having fun no matter what the conditions are. He’s an 8X stand up paddleboard (SUP) World Champion with a passion for competition and innovation on the water.

Extremely focused, Kai found a set of activities that made him come alive. Protective of his passions, he sees the ever-present invitation to consume substances like drugs and alcohol as a threat to his genuine joy. Aware of the life-altering damage that harmful substances can have on a person’s life and trajectory, he made conscious choices to say no — even to friends who were giving him pressure.

Students design a cooler and monitor the effectiveness of its ability to keep a bottle of ice water cold in comparison to a bottle of ice water left at room temperature. Students have the opportunity to brainstorm a design of their cooler and its attributes. They then choose from the materials provided to create a prototype. They have the opportunity to test their prototype by measuring the room temperature, the starting temperature of the water and graphing and monitoring the change in temperature over increments time in comparison to the room temperature water.

Students learn how roadways are designed and constructed, and discuss the advantages and limitations of the current roadway construction process. They look at current practices of roadway monitoring, discuss the limitations, and consider ways to further road monitoring research. To conclude, student groups compete to design smooth, cost-efficient and sound model road bases using gravel, sand, water and rubber (representing asphalt).
