In this lesson, the air pollution problem created by cars and other vehicles is presented. The lesson will highlight causes of this problem, harmful products from it and possible solutions. This law of conservation of mass challenges elementary students ideas about matter, because many children may think that matter is created or destroyed in a chemical reaction. In this lesson, students will challenge their preconceptions about matter by experimenting with physical and chemical changes to determine that the total weight of the matter does not change. Students will use math to show that the total weight of matter is equal to the sum of the weight of its component parts, and they will graph this information to show that the weight of matter is conserved during physical and chemical changes. This lesson results from a collaboration between the Alabama State Department of Education and ASTA.

Students progress to mastery of the course learning objectives by engaging in frequent, structured activities. These activities may be performed individually (pre-class activities), in small groups (discussion, lab, and some whole-class activities), or with an entire lecture section with answers submitted via Top Hat student response system. A Module comprises a set of related content that generally approximates a traditional textbook chapter. Each module is broken into Quanta with distinctive pre-class (brief introduction to content followed by assessment quizzes) and whole-class (higher level content development, “ConcepTest” assessments of individual learning, and small group-oriented activities) activities. Each year, groups of MIT freshmen are introduced to MIT’s laboratory environment through a four-week intensive January course called 5.301 Chemistry Lab Techniques. The stakes are high—students who pass the class are guaranteed a job in an MIT research lab. OpenCourseWare documented the experience of 14 students who took this course in January 2012. Follow their journey over 11 episodes and watch as they struggled with, but ultimately mastered, the techniques needed to be successful in an MIT chemistry lab.
