Whiplash injuries causing whiplash-associated disorder (WAD; spectrum of clinical manifestations resulting from injury) represent a major public health problem. The onset of pain and other symptoms may occur immediately or have a delayed onset. A substantial majority of patients progress to continuing symptoms of pain, inability to function, and loss of work, with or without associated psychological burden of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress syndrome. It is important for a clinician or a health worker to understand the disease from the perspectives of its historical, biomechanical, clinical-therapeutic and bio-psycho-social approaches to effectively manage a patient’s care following a potential injury. In this book, we have summarized that information, organized into different chapters, within the framework of two patients. With this approach, information is easier to understand and directly applicable to clinical practice. We feel that this book acts as a useful resource to medical students and learners, primary care physicians, pain physicians, physiatrists, physical therapists and health providers involved with management of whiplash patients. A conscious attempt has been made to deliver evidence-based information.

Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology.  Also looks at organization of body systems and incorporates anatomical terminology. 

 In this lesson, teachers will describe how puberty prepares human bodies for the potential to reproduce as well as the process of human reproduction with the aid of a PowerPoint presentation. Teachers should review information learned last class while going through slides and questioning the students on what they recall. Teachers explain to students that all of the changes they experience during puberty are due to a new surge of hormones that both females and males experience, often differently. Teachers will also discuss the process of human reproduction by describing the steps needed to conceive a baby. The last activity has students create a diagram of the steps of conception in the right order for teachers to assess what they have retained from the lesson. All mistakes should be reviewed and corrected by the teacher, and then end the lesson with an open-discussion for question.

Anatomy and Physiology students must know some histology and there is no better place to start then by looking at the epithelial cells.

This lesson defines sexual intercourse and the cells involved with reproduction (sperm and egg) using an AMAZE video. It also includes a discussion of how pregnancy can happen via other methods as well. Using a small group activity, this lesson also examines the economic reality of accessing reproductive health care and how economic disparities impact who can and cannot utilize these methods. This information sets the foundation for understanding a basic physiological process and underpins future lessons about pregnancy prevention.
