This guide was created to provide definitions and resources for bioinformatics and genomics terms frequently seen in literature. Each term has been linked to it's original source for additional information and resources. This guide is intended for anyone who is interested in learning more about bioinformatics or genomics. Designed to provide concise yet easy to understand definitions, this allows users with any background level in genomics and bioinformatics to gain a better understanding of some commonly used terms and phrases.

In this module, students use several online databases and bioinformatics tools to study the evolutionary conservation of a protein of their choice. Students are first introduced to amino acid chemistry and to some of the theory underlying sequence comparisons. In the exercises, students:learn how amino acid side chain chemistries are reflected in the BLOSUM62 matrix used to identify conserved regions of protein sequencesuse the BLASTP algorithm to compare two homologous protein sequencesconstruct a multiple sequence alignment that compares homologous proteins from multiple speciesThis module is part of a semester-long introductory laboratory course, Investigations in Molecular Cell Biology, at Boston College.

Galaxy is an open-source web tool (portal) that organizes bioinformatics work-flows. It provides functionality to:Record workflows (history)Share common sequence data (shared data libraries)Import and use (private) sequence dataShare results with others (shared histories)Integrate new tools into the interfaceRun long analyses using batch queues
