The correct use of micropipettes is one of the most important lab skills, but requires some practice. The attached document provides theoretical background together with three practical exercises. Students make a series of dye transfers and then use the spectrophotometer to determine if the transfers have been accurate and/or precise. The objectives are to:learn to select and adjust micropipetteslearn to accurately transfer microliter volumesuse the spectrophotometer to measure absorbanceunderstand experimental errors in measurementsAccompanying resources include links to a video tutorial on using micropipettes as well as a Power Point file. This chapter is part of a semester-long introductory lab course, Investigations in Molecular Cell Biology., at Boston College.
