During the life cycle of a pine, the mature sporophyte produces male and female cones that house the sporangia. Spores that are produced are retained and germinate within the cone, producing the male and female gametophytes. The male gametophyte is found within the pollen grain, and pollination is usually done via the wind. After fertilization, the zygote develops into the embryo and eventually the young seedling, which may take several years to occur.
