    Interest Approach

Together, students will watch this youtube video on mental health in agriculture. This video can be triggering for students and you should warn them before that it is about suicide and if you do not feel comfortable you can step out. Spend time discussing after the video about why this is such a big issue in our industry. There is a huge stigma attached to mental health in ag. How can we use ag communications to overcome this?

    Content/Procedure/Activity

    1. To prepare for this activity, hang up several flip charts around the room titled the following: Food Safety, Agriculture policy, animal issues, environment, biotechnology. Students should divide into groups of 2-3 each group should go to a poster with a marker color that isn’t the same as any other group. They should spend 5 minutes at each poster writing down any ag issues they know under this topic area. They continue around each poster. If there is an issue they have a basic understanding of they should write a shape by the topic. After students have gone through all the posters they can go sit back down as a group. Go through each poster and talk about any topics they might have missed and write it on the poster while you talk about it.

    2. Each group should pick one topic that someone wrote down, no one can have the same topic. The group should research the topic using the assignment document as a guide. Remind students that the first Google link to come up often is not true and does not support agriculture. Make sure to find credible scientific sources of information. They will create a poster about the topic. Each group will hang up their poster and do a gallery walk around the room to learn about each topic. Students will fill out a worksheet for all the posters.
