Remote Learning Plan: Word Choice (Six Traits) Gr. 9-12

    Overview

This Remote Learning Plan was created by Denise Mixdorf in collaboration with Eileen Barks and Caryn Ziettlow as part of the 2020 ESU-NDE Remote Learning Plan Project. Educators worked with coaches to create Remote Learning Plans as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The attached Remote Learning Plan is designed for high school, grades 9-12, ELA students. Students will use a text or their writing to analyze the author's or speaker's word choice. This Remote Learning Plan addresses the following NDE Standard:  Reading 12.1.5.d

It is expected that this Remote Learning Plan will take students approximately 90 minutes to complete.

Remote Learning Plan: Word Choice (Six Traits) Gr. 9-12

    Teachers:

    • This lesson may be included in a review of Six Traits or be a stand-alone lesson on word choice.
    • For the Independent Review of Six Traits, including Word Choice, I've included a Quizizz. Please make a copy of this quiz for your students.
    • For the "Other Ways to Say" activity, I linked a website.  The photo I'm referring to, on that linked website, is the third photo.  You could add the photo image to the Padlet as an easy reference to students.
    • On the Google Slides Resource, there are other ways to complete some tasks if each student receives an editable copy of these Slides. Suggestions are listed below.
      • For the Synonyms of "eat" activity, you'll need some way to aggregate the suggestions.  You might make a copy of this Slide, record suggestions, and add this Slide back to the Google Classroom assignment so all students can view.
      • For the Word Choice Analysis, you'll need to create a collaborative Slide Deck, give students edit access, and have them add their completed analysis to that collaborative Deck.
