    Overview

    This series of lessons includes lectures and activities to demonstrate judging the condition of soil for a given area of land, the qualities of that soil, and identifying management actions to correct the condition if needed.

    Day 1

    Day 2

    Materials:

    One post-it note per student

    Shared Google Classroom document

    Prepare a site to measure slope:

    • Materials:
      • shovel, two posts, and a measuring tape or other measuring device
      • spray paint or other way to designate 20 foot square area
    • Dig a hole minimum 12 inches deep
    • Set posts 100 feet apart (if not possible, set posts 50 feet apart and adjust calculations)
    • Measure out and designate an area 20 feet by 20 feet

    Day 3

    Video:

         Soil and Soil Dynamics

    Prepare a site for a walking field trip to discuss soil depth:

    • Materials:
      • Shovel to dig to expose underlying soil from top to at least 60” down
      • Something to scrape away vegetation if other than shovel
      • Papers and pencils/pens for students to record observations

    Day 4

    Practice dry feel of texture and wet ribboning of textures:

    • Materials:

    Demonstrate reading a Munsell Color Chart

    Day 5

    • Visit cropland demonstrating farming practices discussed
    • Visit rangeland to determine management techniques

    AFNR.HS.15.1.b  Identify proper use of tools utilized in natural resource management (e.g., atmometer, soil pH).

    AFNR.HS.15.3.d  Describe the soil formation process, soil types, and how they affect land use.

    AFNR.HS.14.1.b  Identify actions taken at local, state, and national levels to protect water quality, soil health, air quality, wildlife, and plant species.

    AFNR.HS.14.3.d  Explain components of soil formation, classification, and erosion to explain land use of Nebraska Farmland.

    AFNR.HS.21.3.a  Summarize the environmental factors involved in managing landscapes including soils, water, pests and human actions.

     

    Essential Question:  How can we determine the makeup of the current condition of soil for a given area, the qualities of that soil, and create a management plan to correct the condition if needed?
