Pacing Guide or Suggestions for High School Use?

by Krystal Kovisto 2 years, 5 months ago

Hello,

I will be using this text this fall to teach a Dual Credit High School class. This is my first time ever teaching calculus. Has anyone developed a rough pacing guide, and/or have suggestions about which sections are the most essential? My school runs on a 90-minute block schedule that meets twice a week with a 45-minute class on Friday and our school year is on the short side so I want to make sure to focus on the most essential information for the course.

I am specifically looking at chapters 4 and 6 for possible places to cut out non-essential sections. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Hi Krystal, I am using this textbook for a cc course and not for HS. I do teach AP Calculus (AB) with a dual enrollment option.

You should reach out to your faculty partner and get a copy of that syllabus and assignment guide. Chances are that is also close to 18 1 semester HS course. Use that to guide what is essential. Also make sure to use supplements. WHile this OpenStax textbook is great, it is missing some types of questions that I think are important that students see.

Also poke around on the AP Central web site as Herman/Strang is an approved text for AP. I'll bet someone has a pacing guide. Perhaps join the AP Calculus community and look in the discussions.

My entire curriculum, including videos based on the textbook, pages to take notes over and my calendar can be found at https://sites.google.com/view/mr-melton/calculus-1-math-2413.

I may be completely overthinking this, but in 6.2 Properties of Power Series, Example 6.9 says that g(x)=f'(x)

But wouldn't \(f'(x)=-1/(x-1)^2\)?

I'm really hitting a wall on this one.
