This activity is revised for a face-to-face K-12 classroom, although it is most appropriate for secondary (middle school and high school) levels. I added layers to the warm-up and cool-down and the entirety of the activity could easily last one full (50 minute) class period or be divided into two classes. The entire activity is contextualized as an authentic performance task where prospective students go on a virtual “university campus tour”.

Students will be able to recognize family member classifications (i.e. abuela=grandma), describe family members, and accurately use vocabulary related to families. They will need to acquire information about another individual’s family and will practice describing their own family members. Intermediarios: Introduction to Spanish<>English Community and Legal Translation and Interpreting is intended for students who have advanced skills in both Spanish and English and a basic familiarity with translation and interpretation. Activities are based on the U.S. context. Translation activities increase in difficulty. The sequencing of interpreting activities develops skills gradually by beginning with memory exercises, then moving into class role plays, and finally working with legal interpreting exercises of increasing difficulty. Judicial interpreting activities target the three modes of interpreting used in the judicial setting: sight translation of documents, consecutive interpreting, and simultaneous interpreting.
