Working With Fractions to Find the Unknown Value

             Working with Fractions

Task 1: Introduce the Problem

The teacher will model for the students, folding a blank piece of paper into six boxes/rectangles. In each box/rectangles the students will place the following headings:

1.The Initial Question                2. Prediction                3. How we could solve it,

4. What we needed to know to solve  5. Actually solving it   6.Conclusion/Reflection

In this task, students see a bunch of candies poured on the table.

Question of the lesson: How many candies should each of four people receive if you know how many there are in two thirds of the whole?

The students will then be shown the following short video.

The students will write the following question in the first box on the paper they folded.

Initial Question: How many candies should you receive if they are divided evenly amongst 4 people?

The students will make a prediction of how many they think each person will receive-in the prediction box on their paper.

Task 2: Giving More Informations

Students will now be shown the second video:

Students now know how many candies there are in 2/3 of the total. How many should each person get if the total is split amongst 4 people evenly?

Students will now be allowed to solve the problem in the area of the box that has the title "How we could solve it

They will then be asked to tell what they needed to know to solve the problem in the area of their box that has the title "What we needed to know to solve"

They will then be shown the third and final video

Task 3: The video

The students will now be shown how to actually solve the problem

They will be allowed to copy the solution if their solution was incorrect or if they need an alternative solution.

Example: 38/1 divided by 2/3 = 57

57/4= 14 remainder 1 therefore each of the 4 persons will receive 14 candies with one left over.

The students will now be asked to write down a conclusion/reflection on how far off their estimates were and also what they find interesting or confusing in the lesson.
