Rational Zero Theorem - Step by Step

Explanation

This is to have the students discover the rational zero theorem in small groups.  Each student in each group is given the first step.  They work on the step as a group.  When they finish they bring their work to you to check.  If it is correct you give them the next step.  If it is incorrect they return to their seats and try again.  I have them glue each step on a sheet in order for them to reference later.  This process continues until they have completed the last step.  Generally I print each step in a different color so it is "fun" and easier to keep.

Modification

I did this on a block schedule and the students usually got to the last step, but did not finish it.  You could modify by decreasing the number of examples from four to two.

There is a page for each step.  Caution...There is not the same number on each page for each step.  I usually print each step in a different color to help stay organized.
