Plants, Flowers, Fruits OH MY
Objectives:
The purpose of the activity is to gain knowledge between the relationship between flowers and fruits. Also, to help spot the similarities and differences between both of them.
Keywords:
Seeds, flowers, fruits, growing
Materials: Planting seeds, pots, a package of soil, water, an apple, knife
Activity:
Read the book “A Fruit Is a Suitcase for Seeds”
As a class, have the students raise their hands and say different types of fruit.
Ask what do all fruits have in common? (If seeds do not come up suggest it to the class)
Cut the apple in half and expose the seeds to show to the class.
Ask the class what else has seeds? (Suggest flowers and transition into the next activity)
Assign students into groups of no more than 5 and give each group a pot with already planted soil. Tell the students that each packet of seeds will grow into a beautiful flower with the proper care and attention. Have each student place a seed into the soil and after doing so water the soil and place it near a window ensuring that will get adequate sunlight.
Explain to the class that they will be in charge of these plants and have a designated student each day to water the growing flowers.
After the flowers begin to bloom, revisit the topic and ask the class what are the differences between fruits and flowers and what are some similarities.
Both fruits and flowers both have seeds, making them related even though they look different.
