Exploring SharePoint Permissions
SharePoint can be controlled in a very granular manner using both SharePoint and Active Directory permissions for both users and groups. SharePoint permissions apply only to SharePoint objects, while Active Directory permissions can include any resource on the network. Permissions to SharePoint resources can be as broad or as restrictive as the Site Collection Administrator desires, but it's important to understand what is happening when you grant permission to a resource.
