Field Trip

The third and fourth grade students are going on a field trip together.

There are 147 students.

Each bus holds 34 students. The fourth graders fill 2 buses.

  • Write an equation to find the least number of buses needed for the third graders. Use a letter for the unknown value of your equation.
  • How many buses are needed for the third graders?
  • Explain how you found the number of buses needed for the third graders?

Enter your equation, answer, and explanation in the space provided.

Description

3

Student response includes the following 3 elements.

Modeling Component = 1 point

The student provides a valid equation for finding the least number of buses needed for the third graders. ( 79 divided by 34 = n )

Note: Equation should use a letter for the unknown value

Computation Component = 1 point

The student provides the correct number of buses needed, (3)

Reasoning Component = 1 point

The student provides a valid explanation for how the number of buses was determined, taking the remainder into consideration.

Sample Student Response:

I first needed to find out how many third graders needed a bus. I  did 147- 68 = 79. I got the 68 fourth graders because the problem said there were 2 buses of  34 fourth graders.  When I divided 79 by 34 I got the answer of 2 with a remainder of 11. The third graders need another bus for the 11 other third graders who will not fit on the first two buses. So the third graders need to order 3 buses)

Credit can be given for valid work
34 + 34 = 68 ( number of fourth graders)

147- 68= 79 (number of third graders)

79/34= 2 R 11

Need 3 buses , the third bus for the 11 other third graders.
