Proof Writing Progression
The proof relay is a scaffolded formative assessment as learning.
Goals and Learning Objective
Through this activity students will demonstrate and improve their understanding of making logical arguments by writing deductive proofs.
Task
Students will formulate logical arguments. Level 1 includes all of the "statements" and "justifications" needed to complete the proof. Level 2 includes only the "Statement" side of the proof. Level 3 includes only the "justification" side of the proof. Levels 4 and above provide no extra hints, students must formulate the entire proof on their own.
Procedure
Hand each group a level 1 set (large proof card and smaller proof pieces).
As groups finish level 1, give them level 2 then level 3.
Continue as needed.
For level 4, divide students into small groups and have them complete the remaining proofs.
Lesson Tips
This activity can be used in a variety of ways depending on desired objectives. New proofs can always be written to fit different curriculum and pacing.
Print each level on a different colored card stock. This allows for quick identification of levels at a distance.
Cut out each of the statement and justification cards to go with each level proof.
Time: This activity should take between 30 and 45 minutes.
VA Standards of Learning
G.1 The student will construct and judge the validity of a logical argument consisting of a set of
premises and a conclusion. This will include
d) using deductive reasoning.
G.6 The student, given information in the form of a figure or statement, will prove two triangles are
congruent, using algebraic and coordinate methods as well as deductive proofs.
