PART 1:  LESSON DESCRIPTION

LESSON TITLE

Differentiating Past and Present Verb Tenses (a Remix of Effective Communication Using Past Tense)

ABSTRACT

This lesson plan is a remix from Effective Communication Using Past Tense.  Its focus is to help English as a Second Language (ESL) learners in Adult Basic Education (ABE), Grade Level B, CCR Anchor 1 (SL.3.1-1d), Speaking and Listening Standards, differentiate past and present verb tenses.  The context is communicating symptoms to a healthcare provider, but learners will apply this knowledge to create new knowledge in other contexts.  Learners will engage in collaborative discussions (one-on-one, group, and instructor-led) with diverse partners, build on others' ideas, ask questions, and practice verbal and written use of past and present verb tenses.

LEARNER AUDIENCE/PRIMARY USE

KEY TERMS AND CONCEPTS

  • Regular Verbs usually have the same endings.  The letter “d” or “ed” is added.
  • Irregular Verbs do not follow the general rules of past tense, i.e., adding a “d” or “ed” at the end of a past verb tense.  They are spelled differently from their base forms, i.e., "break" (present tense) and "broke" (past tense).  Some irregular verbs do not change at all, i.e., "cost" is spelled the same for present and past tenses.
  • Present Tense is used to express an action or state that is occurring now or in the present time.
  • Past Tense is used to express actions that have occurred in the past.
