Vedic Civilisation

Vedic is derived from the word ‘Veda’ which are the literature resources found during the Vedic time.

Introduction

The Vedic Period (c. 1500 – c. 500 B.C.E.) is the period in the Indian history during which the Vedas were being composed. The life of this culture was centred around the northern and north-western region. Based on the literature found in this period, the life in the Vedic civilisation is elaborately explained.

Literature Sources

The Vedas: Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, Atharvaveda are the literature composed during this time.

Rigveda was the oldest of all the vedas and explains the various philosophical quests.

Samaveda described the songs and melodies sung along with chants during that time.

Yajurveda reads the mantra and the spiritual and the medicinal elements followed and discovered by the Vedic people.

Atharvaveda describes the practical issues of life of the people in Vedic Civilisation.

Along with this, we have the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata which were written during the Vedic Age.

Religion

The scriptures and literature focuses on the worshipping of nature and natural energy forces. There was no idol worship but the Gods were believed to have evolved from the nature and its resources and commanded the world.
