Historical Perspectives: Juneau Alaska
Modern Juneau
Juneau was designated the state capitol in 1906 when the seat of government was transferred from Sitka. Although still a territory, Alaska was destined to become a state in 1959.
Since that time Juneau evolved into a community where federal, state and local government employs the majority of local residents. Tourism is the largest private sector employer and continues to grow.
Natural resources such as fishing, mining and other locally available resources continue to influence Juneau's economy.
