Microbiology for Earth Scientists
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

Rating
0.0 stars

Microorganisms are the most abundant form of life on Earth and in recent decades it has become increasingly clear that their collective activities are one of the dominant forces shaping the planet.

This book provides earth scientists with an introduction to microbiology and a look at the ways microorganisms are important to their area of expertise. The first part of this book summarizes some basic information about microorganisms, including a discussion of their diversity, physical properties, and metabolisms. From there, the second and third portions of the book are organized around the two-way interactions between microorganisms and their environments. The second portion of the book considers the ways that environmental conditions help determine distributions of microbial activity, including chapters focused on thermodynamic, kinetic, and biological factors. The third and final portion of the book examines the impacts of microbes on their environments. These impacts are placed within the context of earth system science, with chapters focused on impacts to the lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere. In these chapters, emphasis is placed on microbial impacts to greenhouse gas levels and the quality of water resources, underscoring the relevance of microbiology to environmental concerns of keen interest in the earth science community and beyond.

This book is specifically designed for earth science students and can provide a helpful free resource for students in Geomicrobiology courses. However, portions of the book can also have value for students and professionals from any field who are interested in environmental microbiology.

General Biology I: Survey of Cellular Biology

Short Description:
BI101A is a survey course that introduces the discipline of cellular biology, exploring topics including the scientific method, parts of a cell, and how cells function. This book focuses on putting those topics into an appropriate context for students who are not biology majors. Order a print copy: http://www.lulu.com/content/paperback-book/general-biology-i-survey-of-cellular-biology/23678471

Long Description:
BI101: Survey of Cellular Biology is intended for one term of the introductory biology course for non-science majors taught at many two- and four-year colleges. The concepts of cellular biology, as they apply to the study of life, are introduced, including parts of a cell, metabolism, and homeostasis.

This textbook incorporates the mandates found in Vision and Change and focuses on the non-content aspects of biology education that are just as important. Additionally, this book explicitly teaches the general education outcomes that we have identified as important for this class. This textbook pulls together biology content resources that are accessible for our community college non-major biology students, as well as resources to provide them with explicit instruction in the quantitative literacy, communication, and information literacy general education outcomes as they relate to the biology content they are learning.

Genetics, otherwise known as the Science of Heredity, is the study of biological information, and how this information is stored, replicated, transmitted and used by subsequent generations. The study of genetics can be sub-divided into three main areas: Transmission Genetics, Molecular Genetics, and Population Genetics. In this Introductory text, the focus is on Transmission or Classical Genetics, which deals with the basic principles of heredity and the mechanisms by which traits are passed from one generation to the next. The work of Gregor Mendel is central to Transmission Genetics; as such, there is a discussion about the pioneering work performed by him along with Mendel’s Laws, as they pertain to inheritance. Other aspects of Classical Genetics are covered, including the relationship between chromosomes and heredity, the arrangement of genes on chromosomes, and the physical mapping of genes.

"Perspectives of Aquatic Toxicology" is a Wikibook created in Aquatic Toxicology course (A ECL 444/544X / TOX 444/544X) taught by Dr Boris Jovanovic at Iowa State University in Spring 2019. This course adopted open pedagogy practices that included the integration of a renewable assignment whereby students contributed to the creation of this Wikibook. The topics covered in this edition (2019) include: Aquatic Toxicity Tests, Bio-transformations of Xenobiotics, and Micro-plastic Pollution in the Aquatic Environment. Future students taking the Aquatic Toxicology course will contribute to this collective work and help increase the coverage of the topics related to the interaction between anthropogenic chemicals and aquatic ecosystems.

A Primer of Evolution—An Introduction to Evolutionary Thought through Theory, Evidence, and Practice

0.0 stars

A Primer of Evolution is an open educational resource designed for upper-level college students. It provides a succinct introduction to evolutionary thought revolving around theory, evidence, and practice:
- It introduces some of the theoretical cornerstones and core concepts of modern evolutionary biology. The goal is for students to be able to apply these concepts and articulate testable hypotheses that explain natural phenomena from an evolutionary perspective.
- It highlights the diversity of empirical approaches and lines of evidence that scientists use to address evolutionary hypotheses.
- It helps students to practice approaching problems like scientists and evaluate data to address evolutionary hypotheses. To do so, students learn how to program in R to analyze and visualize data and articulate your interpretations and conclusions.

Each chapter provides a conceptual introduction to the topic and includes R-based exercises that allow students to visualize relevant datasets to practice the testing of evolutionary hypotheses. To help with the R exercises, each chapter also provides additional background on case studies and R programming tutorials that help students to develop the necessary skills.

Chapters:
What Evolution Is
Evidence for Evolution
A Mechanism for Change

Laboratories and classroom activities introduce techniques used to study biological processes and provide opportunities for students to develop their ability to conduct research. BI211 focuses on how structure defines function in organisms and the pathways and transformation of energy in living systems. BI212 uses genetics as a model system to understand information flow in living organisms. BI213 focuses on the interactions of living systems and the ecology and evolution of biodiversity.
