This is a set of three, one-page problems about the size and area of solar panels used to generate power. Learners will will use integer arithmetic to tally the number of hydrogen, oxygen and carbon atoms in a molecule and determine the number of methane atoms that can result. Options are presented so that students may learn about how NASA is using signs of methane gas to search for life on other planets, such as Mars, through a NASA press release or about how astrobiologists who are looking for life beyond Earth are using spectroscopy to identify methane plumes on Mars by viewing a NASA eClips video [7 min.]. This activity is part of the Space Math multi-media modules that integrate NASA press releases, NASA archival video, and mathematics problems targeted at specific math standards commonly encountered in middle school.

In this video, we become familiar with integrals, both by understanding them as sums of areas under plots of functions, and by understanding them as anti-derivatives. We present the u-substitution rule, which is the analog of the chain rule for differentiating composite functions.

Interior / exterior angles of a polygon

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the relationship of the interior and exterior angles of a polygon. The applet shows an irregular polygon where one vertex is draggable. As it is dragged the interior and exterior angles at that vertex are displayed, and a formula is continuously updated showing that they are supplementary. The tricky part is when the vertex is dragged inside the polygon making it concave. The applet shows how the relationship still holds provided you get the signs of the angles right. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. Intermediate Algebra Student Workbook, modified by De Anza College's Professor Doli Bambhania, is based upon Intermediate Algebra Student Workbook, Fourth Edition, 2014, by Scottsdale Community College. The included content is designed to lead students through Intermediate Algebra, from a functions modeling approach, and to develop a deep understanding of the concepts associated with functions, from mathematical, computational and applications perspectives. The workbook assumes the knowledge of prealgebra, as well as topics surrounding linear and quadratic functions. Access to a graphing calculator is assumed and the use of one is required for some of the lessons and practice problems.

This is an activity about structures in space. Learners will construct two different types of trusses to develop an understanding of engineering design for truss structures and the role of shapes in the strength of structures. For optimum completion - this activity should span 3 class periods to allow the glue on the structures to dry. This is engineering activity 1 of 2 found in the ISS L.A.B.S. Educator Resource Guide.

The purpose of this task is to help students learn to read information about a function from its graph, by asking them to show the part of the graph that exhibits a certain property of the function. The task could be used to further instruction on understanding functions, or as an assessment tool with the caveat that it requires some amount of creativity to decide how to best illustrate some of the statements.
