Biosecurity is an essential part of maintaining a herd's health as well as the profitability of the operation. This site provides easy to use and comprehensive resources for assessing the current biosecurity protections in an operation, an example of a biosecurity plan, a template for creating a biosecurity plan, and information on communicating to stakeholders about a crisis.

How can you tell if harmful bacteria are in your food or water that might make you sick? What you eat or drink can be contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites and toxins—pathogens that can be harmful or even fatal. Students learn which contaminants have the greatest health risks and how they enter the food supply. While food supply contaminants can be identified from cultures grown in labs, bioengineers are creating technologies to make the detection of contaminated food quicker, easier and more effective.

What does a technology look like that will change the world? Biotechnology has the power to alter all of our lives. The ability to manipulate genes in ways that benefit people is a powerful technology.  In this lesson we will explore various benefits and applications of biotechnology.  You will analyze different perspectives in the race to create biotechnology.  From there you will decide how you feel about “playing with genes” and how that will impact your life.StandardsBio.B.3.2.4  Students will apply scientific thinking, processes, tools, and technologies in the study of genetics.

Everyday, we are surrounded by, and use, numerous products that are the result of biotechnology. However, some of these products face more criticism and controversy than others.  Through this lesson, students will be presented with two scenarios regarding biotechnology products, and they must complete research and formulate opinions regarding these topics.  The class will participate in a class discussion related to the biotechnology products and topics. 

Students in this lesson will investigate the differences in avian beaks and how they are used to benefit their species and lifestyle. There is an introductory portion, a lab portion, a compare and contrast portion and conclusion/reflection. 

Students will utilize previously gained knowledge about the impact of land management practices on ecosystems to design, conduct and analyze an experiment to measure biodiversity and/or invertebrate ecosystem role in a field community. They will identify ecosystems that have been heavily and lightly impacted by human activities and make predictions about biodiversity in the area. They will then test and analyze the information gathered and apply what this means about the biodiversity in these ecosystems and the implications this may have on the region.

The following Business Plan Creation Activity lays out resources from the Small Business Administration for various steps of creating a business plan.  Topics covered include employees, permits, and obligations by law and for taxes; tax ID number, registrations, and government forms; business structure, acquiring startup capital, and location; services available to small business founders, and writing a business plan.

In this lesson, students will be introduced to the grading rubric that will be used for weekly shop or lab grades. In this lesson, students will look at the Nebraska Career Readiness standards, see how they have been modified to fit the shop/lab setting, then brainstorm indicators for each standard. Finally, a PowerPoint will guide students through the rubric will be used. The rubric will be used at the end of each work for students to self evaluate during shop/lab work.  

This lesson is designed to familiarize new students with a piece of equipment they will use weekly if not daily in the welding lab.  Students will learn the key parts and purpose of a chop saw and then demonstrate how to use it. 

This lesson plan was created by Kellee Vornhagen as part of the 2021 Nebraska CTE-Beginning Teachers Institute. The attached lesson plan is designed for students in grades 9-12 as a introduction to a collaboration in the classroom.  This lesson plan can also be used in any class requiring group work of any kind.  Students will create a list of expectations for collaboration, create a poster and present it to the rest of the class. These will be the norms used for group work for the rest of the term.
