"Of the twelve cranial nerves that pass through the skull, the facial nerve is most susceptible to traumatic injury and paralysis. One technique for repairing such damage is polyethylene glycol-mediated cell fusion – or PEG-fusion – but this hasn’t been tested on facial nerves. Moreover, when looking at other nerve types, it’s only been applied immediately after injury. This doesn’t reflect real-world clinical practice, where nerve damage may not be addressed for days as life-saving interventions are prioritized. Now, researchers have applied PEG-fusion to facial nerves using a more clinically relevant timeline, and the results suggest that nerve regeneration is possible even when treatment is delayed. PEG-fusion helps restore the protective boundary of a nerve cell’s plasma membrane by plugging the holes caused by traumatic injury, which can seal the cell off from potentially toxic substances. But it hasn’t been clear whether delayed treatment can still help cells heal..."

Nuclear energy is a carbon-free and extremely energy dense resource that produces no air pollution. Nuclear reactions produce large amounts of energy in the form of heat. That heat can be used to power a steam turbine and generate electricity. There are 2 types of nuclear energy: nuclear fission (which is used today to produce electricity) and nuclear fusion (which is still in the research phase).

"Stroke is the leading cause of death worldwide. Scientists are finding that mitochondrial abnormalities play a central role in stroke. A recent study suggests that deactivating the protein SIAH2 could help mitochondria and the brain cells they power survive stroke in mice. Oxygen deprivation, which makes stroke fatal, activates SIAH2. Once activated, SIAH2 signals the breakdown of mitochondrial and cellular proteins key to survival. Aiming to curb this damage, researchers switched off the gene controlling SIAH2 formation in mouse neurons. and observed what happened after artificially inducing stroke. They found that without SIAH2, neurons suffered low damage during stroke. preserving the machinery that keeps mitochondria alive and well. Understanding how this switch operates in humans is crucial. as it could lead to drugs that target SIAH2 and help reduce the mortality of stroke..."

Nuclear fusion has the potential to be an extremely energy dense and carbon-free energy resource that does not produce air pollution or radioactive waste. However, while nuclear fusion happens continuously in (and even powers) the sun, making nuclear fusion happen on earth is extremely challenging (think about putting the sun in a box). Currently, fusion is in the research phase and is not commercially viable. Nuclear fusion occurs when nuclei from two or more atoms are forced together and fuse to form a single larger nucleus, releasing lots of energy and heat. That heat would then be used to generate electricity.
