"A recent study published in Acta Neuropathologica Communications has found a potential mechanism for the initiation and development of Parkinson’s disease and it appears red blood cells may be partly to blame. Parkinson’s is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disorder commonly associated with tremors, muscle stiffness, and impaired movement. While these symptoms are caused by the deterioration of nerve cells in the brain, the precise cause of the disease is still not fully understood. What is known is that the development of Parkinson’s is associated with the aggregation of toxic forms of a protein named alpha-synuclein (or alpha-syn, for short) in the brain. Recent evidence, however, suggests alpha-syn found in the blood can also be problematic and this has been implicated as a contributor to brain-cell breakdown..."

Red Blood Cells also known as red blood cells (RBCs) or erythrocytes are around 7.5μm in diameter. The average number (red blood cell count) is typically:
*5,200,000 per cubic millimeter ± 300,000 men
*4,700,000 per cubic millimeter ± 300,000 women

Red blood cells are made of hemoglobin. When the hemoglobin combines with oxygen it is called oxyhemoglobin, when oxygen has been released it is known as deoxyhemoglobin. The RBC initially have a nuclei during the early stages of development, they then remove the nuclei to help make room for hemoglobin.

"Thrombospondin-1, or TSP-1, is a calcium-binding protein implicated in the development of several diseases, including diabetes, cancer, renal failure, and cardiovascular disease. To understand TSP-1’s role in disease, researchers recently examined the protein’s effects on the calcium dynamics, survival, and deformability of red blood cells. In vitro experiments showed that exposure to recombinant human TSP-1 significantly increased calcium levels in red blood cells. TSP-1 treatment also induced an inward ionic current, suggesting possible calcium influx through non-selective cation channels, and TSP-1 caused the deformation of red blood cells. Further experiments revealed that TSP-1 binding to its receptor CD47 could dictate the lifespan of red blood cells in circulation. Altogether, the findings suggest that TSP-1/CD47 signaling could be one targetable pathway in systemic diseases that attack red blood cells..."
