The battle is on in this game where you build your own potions! Check your ratios to win this mixture mix-off. Ratio Rumble guides students in: identifying ratios when used in a variety of contextual situations; providing visual representations of ratios; solving common problems or communicating by using rate, particularly unit rates; and explaining why ratios and rates naturally relate to fractions and decimals.

This activitiy will look at different ways to write ratios and how we see and use ratios in real life.

The purpose of this task is to engage students in Standard for Mathematical Practice 4, Model with mathematics and as such, the question as it is worded cannot be answered without making some assumptions. For example, if the items that are purchased do not have the same value, then the price reduction depends on the cost of the items.

Students will analyze ratios and use proportions to solve problems using a cooperative, kinesthetic activity in which they will create “human ratios.” Students will apply proportional reasoning to demonstrate application of a multiplicative situation by using cross products to solving proportions.

This problem can be solved in more than one way. The choice in solution method may reflect the comfort and mathematical sophistication of the student.

This is a multi-step problem since it requires more than two steps no matter how it is solved. The problem is not scaffolded for the student, but each step is straightforward and should follow from the previous with a careful reading of the problem.

Parts (a) and (b) of the task ask students to find the unit rates that one can compute in this context. Part (b) does not specify whether the units should be laps or km, so answers can be expressed using either one.

In this lesson designed to enhance literacy skills, students examine how to use fractions to measure and help conserve freshwater resources.

In this problem-based learning module, students will raise awareness about the amount of excess food wasted each day in America’s schools highlights the consumptive mindset that our county has.  Each day in third world countries, as well as our own, children go without the proper nutrition needed to focus on other activities. This module will raise student awareness about the amount of food taken from the service line and then placed in waste receptacles.  Students will gather and analyze data regarding wasted food in an attempt to design a solution to reduce food waste. Sation rotation will allow to conduct research into the global problems associated with the lack of food and malnutrition. Mathematical skills will be required to calculate rates and percentages of consumption which will be used for analysis.
