    Essential Question

How do the hospitality and event planning industries impact the economy, cultures, and the environment?

    Learning Goal

    Students will be able to:

1 - Explore the economic, cultural, and environmental impacts of hospitality and event planning.

    Instructor notes:

    Standard:  BMM.HS.17.1.d

Materials: Projector or computer for PowerPoint (attached), Internet access for research, worksheet and answer sheet (attached)

Bell Work: Silent 60 (Mindfulness activity): Start the class by having all students sit quietly for 60 seconds to get themselves ready for learning. Have them focus on an image you provide (e.g., the picture of Maya Angelou quote on screen (attached).  Ask if anyone wants to share what came to mind when reading the quote or looking at the picture.

    Content / Procedure / Activity:

Open PowerPoint (attached) and notice the notes on the slides.  These will have additional details.  Instruct students to open the worksheet (attached) from Schoology or print it out for them.  As directed on the screen, you can group them several ways (3 groups for each impact/slide) or groups per slide and question on the worksheet. They should complete the worksheet (attached) for their research.  They can fill in when the other groups present their findings.

Economic Impact of Hospitality and Event Planning:

Introduce the economic impact of hospitality and event planning on local, regional, and national economies. Discuss concepts such as job creation, revenue generation, and tourism.

    • Divide the class into groups and assign each group a specific aspect to research (e.g., job creation, tax revenue, multiplier effect).
    • Instruct each group to conduct independent research to gather data and statistics related to their assigned aspect.
    • Allow time for group discussions and preparation of short presentations on their findings.
    • Have each group present their findings to the class, encouraging questions and discussions.

Cultural Impact of Hospitality and Event Planning:

(Same instructions as above or you could just hold a discussion- Socratic seminar-style to share what they learned and ask questions) Explain the cultural impact of hospitality and event planning, focusing on the promotion of local cultures, heritage, and traditions.

    • Engage the students in a brainstorming activity where they identify and discuss examples of how events and hospitality establishments can showcase cultural diversity and preserve cultural heritage.
    • Show videos or share stories about events or hospitality establishments that have successfully incorporated local culture into their offerings.
    • Divide the class into pairs and assign them different cultural aspects (food, music, customs, art) to research.
    • Instruct each pair to prepare a short presentation on their findings, highlighting how hospitality and event planning contribute to cultural exchange and understanding.

Environmental Impact of Hospitality and Event Planning

(New or same groups) Discuss the environmental impact of hospitality and event planning, including topics such as waste management, energy consumption, and sustainable practices.

    • Facilitate a class discussion on the challenges and opportunities for promoting environmental sustainability within the industry.
    • Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a specific environmental issue (e.g., plastic waste, water conservation, renewable energy).
    • Instruct each group to research and compile a list of sustainable practices and solutions related to their assigned issue.
    • Allow time for group presentations, focusing on practical recommendations for event planners and hospitality establishments to reduce their environmental footprint.

Closure: Summarize the main points discussed throughout the lesson plan, emphasizing the importance of considering the economic, cultural, and environmental impacts of hospitality and event planning. Encourage students to reflect on how they can contribute positively to the industry in the future, taking into account sustainability and cultural sensitivity.
