    Overview

    This section discusses the composition of the Texas State Legislature.

    Pale, Male, and Stale

    Pale, Male, and Stale

    It’s often been said the Texas State Legislature is “pale, male, and stale.” This may not be quite as accurate as in the past, but the Texas State Legislature is prodominantly white, male, and middle aged.

    Partisan Compostion

    The Republican Party controls both the Texas State House of Representatives  and the Texas State Senate: 2019 / 86th Texas Legislature

    • The Texas State House of Representatives currently has 84 Republicans and 66 Democrats.
    • The Texas State Senate currently has 19 Republicans and 12 Democrats

    Gender Composition

    The Texas State Legislature is predominantly male. 2019 86th Legislature

    • Approximately 76% of the Texas State House of Representatives is male (114 males, 33 females)
    • Approximately 71% of the Texas State Senate is male (22 males, 9 females)
    • Take together, almost 77% of the total membership of the Texas State Legislature is male (139 of 181 total members)

    Racial Composition

    Approximately two-thirds of the Texas State Legislature is white.

    The 86th Legislature (beginning 2019) was composed as follows:

    • 114 White members
    • 45 Hispanic members
    • 19 African-American members
    • 3 Asian members

    Age Composition

    Over 50% of the Texas Legislature is above the age of 50. 2019 86th Legislature

    • Under 35 years of age     [11 members = 6%]
    • 35-49 years of age           [72 members = 40%]
    • 50-64 years of age           [66 members = 36%]
    • Over 64 years of age       [32 members = 18%]
