OSPI Statistics and Geometry Instructional Task: Escaped Boat

    Overview

This resource was created by the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

    Task

OSPI Statistics and Geometry Instructional Task A

Statistics and Geometry; Standard G-SRT.5, Claim 1; Claim 3F

    Escaped Boat

Catarina’s boat has come untied and floated away on the lake.  She is standing atop a cliff that is  above the water in a lake.  If she stands  from the edge of the cliff, she can visually align the top of the cliff with the water at the back of her boat.  Her eye level is  above the ground.

    • Approximately how far out from the cliff is Catarina’s boat?  Show your work.  Round to the nearest tenth of a foot.

Catarina moves to 5 feet from the edge of the cliff. She claims that she can still visually align the top of the cliff with the water at the back of her boat.

    • Is her claim valid? Support your reasoning with numbers and words.

    Claim 1

    Claim 3F

A 2-point response demonstrates reasonable understanding of the standard and claims by doing all the following:

    • Provides supporting work and writes 63.6 feet.

States Catarina’s claim is invalid and that the new triangle formed when she moves 5 feet toward the edge is no longer similar to the old triangle, or equivalent.

A 1-point response demonstrates partial understanding of the standard and claims by doing one of the following:

    • Provides supporting work and writes 63.6 feet.

States Catarina’s claim is invalid and that the new triangle formed when she moves 5 feet toward the edge is no longer similar to the old triangle, or equivalent.

A 0-point response demonstrates almost no understanding of the standard and claims.

    •
    • Catarina’s boat is about 63.6 feet from the cliff.
    • If Catarina moves to 5 feet from the edge of the cliff, the angle she has with the top of the cliff and the boat will decrease. The distance from the cliff to where her eyes meet the water will be half the distance to the boat. Her claim is not valid.
