This course is is a collection of resources on OER Commons curated for Adult Education instructors and students to show the integration of math into the Information Technology Career Sector. Students will analyze and practice specific skills related to being in IT as well as develop math skills. Modules in this curriculum guide can be studied in any particular order as one does not necessarily build upon the other. Each includes the idea of building mathematical and logic skills required for programming and other IT related careers.

Though some of the resources might seem like a stretch for that age range it allows for some differentiation for those students that are looking to expand their knowledge base. Interior / exterior angles of a polygon

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the relationship of the interior and exterior angles of a polygon. The applet shows an irregular polygon where one vertex is draggable. As it is dragged the interior and exterior angles at that vertex are displayed, and a formula is continuously updated showing that they are supplementary. The tricky part is when the vertex is dragged inside the polygon making it concave. The applet shows how the relationship still holds provided you get the signs of the angles right. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. This resource is a component of the Math Open Reference Interactive Geometry textbook project at http://www.mathopenref.com.

The purpose of this task is to help students learn to read information about a function from its graph, by asking them to show the part of the graph that exhibits a certain property of the function. The task could be used to further instruction on understanding functions, or as an assessment tool with the caveat that it requires some amount of creativity to decide how to best illustrate some of the statements.

This problem provides an opportunity to experiment with modeling real data. Populations are often modeled with exponential functions and in this particular case we see that, over the last 200 years, the rate of population growth accelerated rapidly, reaching a peak a little after the middle of the 20th century and now it is slowing down.

Intraocular Pressure Sensor Design Challenge

Acting as if they are biomedical engineers, students design and print 3D prototypes of pressure sensors that measure the pressure of the eyes of people diagnosed with glaucoma. After completing the tasks within the associated lesson, students conduct research on pressure gauges, apply their understanding of radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology and its components, iterate their designs to make improvements, and use 3D software to design and print 3D prototypes. After successful 3D printing, teams present their models to their peers. If a 3D printer is not available, use alternate fabrication materials such as modeling clay, or end the activity once the designs are complete.

With an emphasis on the corporate form of business organization, this lesson will examine how financial transactions are analyzed and then reported using four financial statements: the income statement, statement of changes in equity, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows. The lesson starts with a review of basic geometric terms.Angles are defined.There are four types of angles.A right angle measures 90° and forms a square corner. If you were to sit inside a right angle, you would be sitting straight up.An acute angle measures less than 90° and is open less than a right angle. Acute angles have a smaller measurement. Think of them as small and cute. =) If you were sitting inside an acute angle, you would be bent together like a 'V'.An obtuse angle measures more than 90° and is open more than a right angle. Obtuse angles have a larger measurement. If you were to sit inside a obtuse angle, you would be leaning back as if you were lounging in a beach chair by the pool.A straight angle measures exactly 180° and forms a straight line. If you were to sit inside a straight angle, you would actually have to lay down flat on your back.

Students explore the basics of DC circuits, analyzing the light from light bulbs when connected in series and parallel circuits. Ohm's law and the equation for power dissipated by a circuit are the two primary equations used to explore circuits connected in series and parallel. Students measure and see the effect of power dissipation from the light bulbs. Kirchhoff's voltage law is used to show how two resistor elements add in series, while Kirchhoff's current law is used to explain how two resistor elements add when in parallel. Students also learn how electrical engineers apply this knowledge to solve problems. Power dissipation is particularly important with the introduction of LED bulbs and claims of energy efficiency, and understanding how power dissipation is calculated helps when evaluating these types of claims. This activity is designed to introduce students to the concepts needed to understand how circuits can be reduced algebraically.
