Substance Abuse and Making Healthy Choices

The Maryland State Department of Education is working to prevent the misuse and abuse of opioids. This is a student-centered lesson for 3th grade students. This lesson, Substance Abuse and Making Healthy Choices, can be modified or remixed to meet the needs of the students you teach. The content of this lesson includes explaining by definition what is a drug. Students then learn drugs can come in many forms and can have different uses, and because of this students should not use drugs/medicine unless instructed to by a trusted adult. Beaverton School District - MS and HS Health Lessons on Fentanyl

Teacher resources, MS and HS lessons on fake pills made of fentanyl - fentapills. Deaths from fake pills with fentanyl are surging across the country and right here in our own school district. In the past 18 months, we've lost several students to fentanyl-related poisonings — teenagers who had hopes and dreams and plans. These teenagers had families who loved them and are still coming to grips with their losses. Teens are purchasing what they think are OxyContin, Percoset or Xanax pills via social media, but drug dealers are making these fake pills with the cheaper, stronger and more deadly synthetic drug called fentanyl to increase their profits. Fentanyl is up to 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine. Fentanyl is odorless, tasteless and colorless. Teens never know what they’re getting. One pill can kill them. One pill.

Discovering My Identity

In this lesson, students will describe aspects of their identities such as race, gender, class, age, ability, religion and more. They will watch two video clips featuring Marley Dias, an eleven-year-old girl who started the #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign, a book drive with the goal of collecting 1,000 books featuring African-American girls. After learning about the campaign, students will review illustrated books in their classroom and school library and analyze whether the characters in the books reflect their own identities or the identities of their families and friends. Finally, students will write a book review on one of the books and examine how the book’s characters are similar to or different from them.
