Zimbabwe ICT Essentials Accessibility Guide

(View Complete Item Description)

Zimbabwe ICT Essentials for Teachers Course Accessibility Guide. The Zimbabwe ICT Essentials for Teachers Course is designed to help teachers acquire skills and competencies to allow them to incorporate ICT in their teaching and student learning. The course is meant to work as an offline resource, although some units include web-based activities. In many programmes and initiatives in Zimbabwe, disability is frequently overlooked. This is sometimes true even in cases where institutional policies are in place to guide staff on handling disability issues. In these circumstances, it is prudent to first tackle the issue of accessibility before giving attention to issues relating to education or ICT. To address disability issues, there is a need to follow the guidelines laid out in the global and regional Declaration of the African Decade of the Disabled and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Disabled. Both these instruments stress the need to provide information to the disabled in accessible formats. Implementation of these instruments is a real challenge because attitudinal barriers and a culture of invisibility on disability issues is perpetrated in Zimbabwe. In view of the many challenges that Zimbabwe faces, there is a need for research to establish what is workable for the disabled in this country. Moreover, there is a need for those with physical challenges to be ICT-proficient in order to have access to the incredible resources that the digital world has to offer. Consequently, this guide is designed to support the participant in customising their computer to optimise their course experience.
