About me

I serve as dean of the Instructional Development and Academic Support Division at Piedmont Technical College (PTC). I have taught for PTC for about 21 years, 18 years as a full-time instructor. I love to write, love to teach writing, and love to read my students' words.

I began my college career as a pre-med student at the University of South Carolina at Union. In 1987, I earned an associate's degree (biology emphasis) from that institution. Because I enjoyed writing so much, I decided to change majors. I entered Newberry College and earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1989. Later, I entered a graduate-level program of study at Western Carolina University and subsequently earned a master's degree in English literature in 1997. Most recently, I completed a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from Liberty University in 2018.

I have been married to my husband, Rick, (yes, I'm married to Ricky Martin) for almost 29 years. We have three sons: Noah (who will be 21 this July), Bennett (19), and Garrett (13). Two different doctors told us we would never be able to have children. Thankfully, doctors do not know everything. I understand we are truly blessed to have our family, and I treasure the time we have together.

Writing is not only my vocation; it is my avocation. I love to write and was very excited to see my first novel (Proven Guilty by L. Caroline Martin) in print. In addition to writing novels, I like to write short stories, essays, and children's books. I spend any free time I have with my family; we love to watch good movies together. I enjoy singing in my church choir and appreciate different types of music.
