DIT Digital
DIT Digital is a series of pedagogical collaborations with students on Sussex University's Post-Punk Britain module. From the start we imagined the module as an experiment in democratic teaching and learning. We use the growth of academic work around subcultures and youth culture since 1976 to explore bigger questions around what it means to be a contemporary historian today. This means that we look at local histories, archival practices, life history like memoirs, sound, image and moving images, and oral history alongside popular culture.
We are inspired by current work by The Subcultures Network, the Punk Scholars Network, and KISMIF.
Each year students work together to build Open Educational Resources inspired by the module, which can be used in other modules, other institutions and other educational environments. We particularly explore the relationship between DIY cultures and open access resources and social networking today. We break down the distinction between digital and analogue sources, and between what happens in the teaching environment and in the wider community.
