Table Salt Item Set - MISA
Students in a chemistry class wondered if there is a difference in the salt found in table salt and the salt put down to melt ice on streets. The students’ research indicated that sodium chloride (NaCl) is the primary ingredient in table salt, while calcium chloride (CaCl2) is used to deice streets. The table lists the physical properties of these two compounds.
PROPERTIES OF TWO SALTS
Compound | Appearence | Melting Point (°C) | Boiling Point (°C) | Density (g/cm3) |
Sodium Chloride | oderless, white cubic crystals | 800.8 | 1465 | 2.165 |
Calcium Chloride | oderless, white powder or flake | 782 | 1600 | 2.15 |
