Table Salt Item Set - MISA
Students learn from their research that an acid-base reaction forms a salt. Sodium chloride is found in nature and can be mined or isolated from seawater. Calcium chloride is not as common in nature as sodium chloride. A modified acid-base reaction is used to manufacture calcium chloride from limestone (CaCO3). The reaction is shown.
CaCO3 + HCl → CaCl2 + H2O + CO2
A typical reaction rate is shown in the graph.
The graph is titled Reaction Rate. The y-axis is labeled Volume of Product. The X-axis is labeled Time. The line starts at the intersection of the two axes and moves upward. At about three-fourths of the way up the y-axis and one-fourth of the way down the x-axis, the line starts to level out.
