Acquired or Inherited? These are my genes!

Objective:

Students will write a short story that includes genetic traits followed through three generations.

Prior Knowledge:

Students should understand:

  • How to complete Punnett squares

  • How to read a Punnett square

  • How to draw a pedigree

  • How to write a short story

  • The effect of type 2 diabetes on human physiology

Goal:

The goal of this lesson is for students to:

  • Design a short story

  • Draw a pedigree as evidence of gene inheritance

  • Compare and contrast acquired versus inherited traits

  • Explain dominant versus recessive traits

Procedure:

Your group’s task will be to write a short story about a fictitious town.  The town’s description must be complete with businesses, restaurants and schools.  The short story will follow three generations after the initial characters given to the group.  Each character added to the town must be described in the same manner as the original character cards.  Also, each character must be part of the short story. You may add illustrations to your short story but they are not required.  A pedigree must be drawn for each trait given on the character cards. Also, a pedigree must be drawn for type 2 diabetes. All pedigrees will be graded collectively using the attached pedigree rubric. This grade will be separate from your short story grade.

Please refer to the short story rubric in order to make sure all requirements for the project are met at submission. Your short story must be submitted electronically and you are free to use any web tool to develop your story.   Please feel free to ask any questions throughout the group discussion. Have fun!
