What is Storybird?

Storybird is a digital resource that allows users to make a variety of stories, poems, and comics. It is a web-based site that is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems. Students can also read work that is on the site, and they can complete challenges to build their reading and writing skills. Teachers can also assign challenges for students and these challenges are also aligned with Common Core State Standards.

Steps for Using Storybird

First, you must sign in, or create an account.

Once you have signed in, you will see your home dashboard which gives you access to recent reading and writing, challenges you have completed, and open assignments. You can also use the home page to navigate to different classrooms you have set up, as well as challenges that have been posted to the site. There are also two tabs at the top labeled as read and write. By selecting read, this will navigate to all of the books and other creations that have been reviewed and published to the site. By selecting write, this will navigate to where you can make a creation.

To make a creation, select a type.

You can choose from the following options:

  • Picture Book
  • Long Form Story
  •  Comics
  • Flash Fiction
  • Poetry

When you are creating your own, Storybird asks you to select an image to start. There are 10000+ images to choose from on the site. You can browse through, or you can search for a specific topic.

Once you have selected your image, it is time to start writing. Each creation has preset boxes that you can click and move around the page. On the picture books, long form stories, and poetry, there are options to add in multiple pictures and add additional pages. For the flash fiction, a single image is selected. Flash fiction is set up for writing that is 500 words or less. Comics have a different set of illustrations that can be used and smaller text boxes.

Help Community

You can find the help community by scrolling down to the bottom of most pages. The only exceptions are when you are currently creating content. When you scroll to the bottom, you will find a link that says "Q&AHelp". This navigates to the help page where you can browse by topic, or you can search a question at the top. If you cannot find what you need help with, there is a "contact us" link that allows you to send an email to their support team.
