The course aims at providing the fundamental tools for effective C++ programming in the context of high-performance computing. The tools include generic programming techniques, API development, and specific C++-11/14/17 constructs. Starting from a basic knowledge of C++, the attendees should be able to start using C++ language to engineer durable abstractions to develop and optimize applications. Example usage of modern C++ concepts and features are taken from scientific applications used by the HPC community, giving the attendees the opportunity to see the presented tools in action in real world cases.  Exercises are provided from a GitHub repository.  This material is meant to reflect the current state of the current C++ standard.  As the standard changes, some aspects of this course may become outdated. This course is an integral part of the ESiWACE-2 project, and we acknowledge the partial funding from that project.  The contact person is william.sawyer@cscs.ch.

The in-service teacher training programme was developed and adapted to UNESCO ICT Competency Framework for Teachers (CFT Version 3) and built by adapting and supplementing existing Open Educational Resources (OER). UNESCO ICT CFT consists of 18 competencies organized according to the six aspects of teachers’ professional practice, over three levels of teachers’ pedagogical use of ICT. The underlying idea is that teachers who have competencies to use ICT in their professional practice will deliver quality education and ultimately be able to effectively guide the development of students’ ICT competencies. Rwanda in-service teacher training programme focuses on competencies to integrate the appropriate ICT tools in a classroom setting and bring new experiences to Rwandan schools so that students and teachers have more exposure to an environment that grants them access to more valuable information. The in-service teacher training programme is designed to empower Rwandan school teachers to use ICT as an educational tool to enhance their teaching and learning.

Our brains control every movement we make. Most of us take for granted our ability to pick up a cup or change the television station. However, for people who have lost a limb or become paralyzed, the inability to do these things means a loss of freedom and independence. This video segment from Greater Boston describes how neuroscientists and bioengineers have teamed up to create a system that allows people who have lost motor functions to control electronic devices through their thoughts alone. Grades 6-12

Aerospace Structures by Eric Raymond Johnson is a 600+ page text and reference book for junior, senior, and graduate-level aerospace engineering students. The text begins with a discussion of the aerodynamic and inertia loads acting on aircraft in symmetric flight and presents a linear theory for the status and dynamic response of thin-walled straight bars with closed and open cross-sections. Isotropic and fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials including temperature effects are modeled with Hooke’s law. Methods of analyses are by differential equations, Castigliano’s theorems, the direct stiffness method, the finite element method, and Lagrange’s equations. There are numerous examples for the response axial bars, beams, coplanar trusses, coplanar frames, and coplanar curved bars. Failure initiation by the von Mises yield criterion, buckling, wing divergence, fracture, and by Puck’s criterion for FRP composites are presented in the examples.

This astronomy program is designed for middle school children in out-of-school-time settings. The program explores basic astronomy concepts (like invisible light, telescopes) and focuses on the universe outside the solar system (stars, galaxies, black holes). The program is structured for use in a variety of settings, including astronomy days, summer camps, or year-long afterschool programs. Although session activities build concepts sequentially, each session activity is designed to be freestanding as not all participants may attend every session. A manual provides background information and descriptions of how to conduct each activity. A companion website provides additional information and resources for the program leader.

In this module, students prepare and run an agarose gel that they use to separate DNA molecules of various sizes. Students stain the gels with ethidium bromide to visualize the positions of DNA molecules. Students estimate the sizes of separated DNA molecules by their migration distances relative to those of molecular weight standards. This module is part of a semester-long introductory lab class, Investigations in Molecular Cell Biology, at Boston College.
