Challenging math problems worth solving.
The name “Open Middle” might sound like a strange name for a website about math problems. However, it references a very specific type of problem we try to encourage here. Most of the problems on this site have:
* a “closed beginning” meaning that they all start with the same initial problem.
* a “closed end” meaning that they all end with the same answer.
* an “open middle” meaning that there are multiple ways to approach and ultimately solve the problem.
Open middle problems generally require a higher Depth of Knowledge than most problems that assess procedural and conceptual understanding. They support the Common Core State Standards and provide students with opportunities for discussing their thinking.
Polyup is a math education app available freely on the web. With the goal of instilling creative problem solving and computational thinking skills into K-12 students, Polyup allows students to play with numbers and functions in a freeform environment.
Permitted use: Polyup is available today on the web on any internet-enabled device. As its core philosophy, Polyup is and will always be available for free to students and teachers
In preparation for school closures, SFUSD has produced 10 days of activities that teachers can choose to assign to students for them to complete at home. The stand-alone activities are designed for students to do on paper without technology and are available to all under the Creative Commons Attribution License.
All Elementary lesson plans and student pages (both English and Spanish versions) are Google Docs located in grade-level Google Drive folders that you can access using the links below. Secondary lessons contain proprietary content that is licensed by SFUSD and therefore can not be shared.

Explore what it means for a mathematical statement to be balanced or unbalanced by interacting with integers and variables on a balance. Find multiple ways to balance x and y to build a system of equations.
Inspiring Math Success for all Students through Growth Mindsets and Innovative Teaching
Our main goal is to inspire, educate and empower teachers of mathematics, transforming the latest research on math learning into accessible and practical forms.
By providing research based teaching methods, math tasks, videos, and ideas we intend to significantly reduce math failure and inequality in the United States and beyond, inspiring teachers and empowering all students to success.
