Cardboard Automata are a playful way to explore simple machine elements while creating a mechanical sculpture. This activity was inspired by the Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, a group of automata builders based in England. Artists like Paul Spooner, Keith Newstead, and Carlos Zapata build beautiful narrative pieces using elegant mechanisms based on cams, gears, springs, and linkages. Working with simple materials, this activity is easy to get started, and may become as complex as your mechanical sculpture ideas.

In this activity, student teams research and develop a proposal to decrease the carbon footprint of their city's/town's public transportation system and then prepare a report that explains why their transportation plan is the best for their community.

This publication was produced as a teaching tool for college chemistry. The book is a text for a computer-based unit on the chemistry of acid-base titrations, and is designed for use with FORTRAN or BASIC.computer systems, and with a programmable electronic calculator, in a variety of educational settings. The text attempts to present computer programs that are relatively free of reliance on specialized large computer systems programs. The case-study approach presented is highly research and laboratory oriented. Similar subject matter is conventionally taught in most introductory college chemistry courses, but this text material attempts greater depth of instruction through utilization of the computational resources of a computer.

There are two types of catalysis reactions: homogeneous and heterogeneous. In a homogeneous reaction, the catalyst is in the same phase as the reactants. In a heterogeneous reaction, the catalyst is in a different phase from the reactants. This activity addresses homogeneous catalysis.

This video lesson aims to motivate students about chemistry and to raise their awareness about how chemistry helps in solving certain environmental problems. In this lesson, the air pollution problem created by cars and other vehicles is presented. The lesson will highlight causes of this problem, harmful products from it and possible solutions. There will also be discussion of ways to convert the pollutants produced by burning oil in vehicles into more friendly products.

Each year, groups of MIT freshmen are introduced to MIT's laboratory environment through a four-week intensive January course called 5.301 Chemistry Lab Techniques. The stakes are high—students who pass the class are guaranteed a job in an MIT research lab. OpenCourseWare documented the experience of 14 students who took this course in January 2012. Follow their journey over 11 episodes and watch as they struggled with, but ultimately mastered, the techniques needed to be successful in an MIT chemistry lab. WARNING NOTICE The experiments described in these materials are potentially hazardous. ChemVantage is an Open Educational Resource for college-level General Chemistry. Instructors have free access to thousands of question items suitable for quizzes, homework assignments and exams. ChemVantage is most useful when used as an LTI Advantage app with the class learning management system (LMS). Student scores on assignments are automatically returned to the LMS grade book. In addition, instructors can use Gen Chem placement exams for advising, video lectures with embedded quizlets, reading assignments with key concept questions and clicker-less in-class polls to sharpen student engagement. Student licenses are only $2 USD per month or $16 USD/year. Institutions can purchase student licenses in bulk for as little as $2/student/year.
