Acquiring the use of a car is a rite of passage for high school students. In this personal financial literacy lesson, students will investigate the cost of a car, types of lending agencies, and additional costs associated with car ownership. This lesson does require that students have access to the internet for research purposes. This lesson includes optional modifications for distance learning. Resources for use in Google Classroom are included.

How would you spend your dream vacation with a budget of $5,000? For this activity, students get to go on their dream vacation! They have to buy plane tickets and hotel rooms, find attractions to visit, explore new restaurants, and get out of their comfort zone and explore the world! Students will also have to budget all of their money, with the goal of getting as close to $5,000 as possible. Finally, students will organize their project using any resource they want (poster, powerpoint, etc.) and present their information to the class!

This lesson teaches students about the importance of budgets. First, use the Discussion Guide (found in Task 1) to teach students about this concept. Then, use the activity (found in Task 3) to assess their understanding. The course should be useful for those who intend to work as management consultants, for LFM (Leaders for Manufacturing) students, and in general, for those who will become senior managers.

Students complete a short survey to find out about their current money skills and explore things they can do to manage money better.

MYOB is designed to show students that the key to financial health is simple: Spend less than you make. Students are expected to set and follow a monthly budget and regularly monitor their checking and savings accounts while avoiding debt. However, students must balance their comfort level as well. In order to win the game, players must achieve and maintain the game goals for each scenario (such as savings, debt, and comfort goals) before time runs out.

MYOB contains ten scenarios, each dealing with different financial challenges and covering a mixture of financial literacy objectives. In each scenario, the player will earn a paycheck every four weeks. After they deposit their paycheck, they are prompted to set a budget for the next four weeks. Then they are free to determine how to spend their TIME, COMFORT, and MONEY, by choosing from any of the options on the screen, from paying bills to going shopping.

Every action the player takes in the game will impact their score in one of these three areas. If the player does not have enough time, comfort, or money to complete an action, the Perform button will be disabled. They will have to either choose a different action or perform an action that will give them enough resources to complete it.

Once the player has used all of the time points allotted for each four-week period, they will see a monthly summary, which provides feedback on their performance during that time. In order to win the game, the player must MEET or EXCEED the minimum SAVINGS REQUIREMENTS, DEBT REPAYMENT GOAL, and COMFORT LEVEL set out at the beginning of the scenario. Throughout the game, the player must strategically use their time, comfort, and money in order to achieve and maintain the scenario goals.

This lesson aims at teaching adults how to budget. It is intended as part of a series regarding money management for people with high-school reading and math skills who nevertheless lack the specific knowledge and competences required to make financial plans. It includes material drawn from various sources and suggests activities combining text comprehension, numerical operations and computer use. Its content applies both to personal and professional situations.

Save The Food! A Food Waste Prevention Teacher's Guide This resource provides five lesson plans and resources about preventing food waste. Wasted food costs money and harms the environment. This course explains basic concepts of food waste prevention and provides easy tips for students to follow. The content was adapted from the EPA’s “Food: Too Good to Waste” tool kit.The course was developed by Audrey Seligman, MPH, with assistance and consultation from George Schooley, M.A. TESOL. Funding for the course was provided by the Ramsey/Washington Recycling & Energy Board.
