This is a lab activity that allows students to collect data to practice using effective measurement. While other authors have produced similar labs, this version includes uncertainty analysis consistent with effective measurement technique as presented in the module Measurement and Uncertainty.

Changes in rechargeable battery technology have dictated the supply and demand of commodities such as lithium, cobalt, cadmium, nickel, and lead. Students will study the changing technologies and other societal factors (such as human health) to see their impacts on mineral extraction and processing.

This activity is based on the global supply and demand relationships of rare earth elements (REE). Students will work in small groups to analyze China's role in global REE production and supply, and how REE production, supply, and demand control REE price.

Mined phosphorus is considered essential for agriculture, especially with the need to feed the ever growing population. However, there are consequences of phosphate mining and use, including pollution at mine sites and fertilizer processing plants, heavy metal accumulation in soil where fertilizers are used, national security issues intertwined with Morocco's dominance of the world supply, and eutrophication that comes with alteration of the phosphorus cycle. Students will consider these issues, their own roles in the problem, and possible solutions in this jigsaw activity.

This activity asks students to investigate different aspects of gold mining and think critically about the perceived and real needs for this mineral resource as well as the impacts (both positive and negative) that both gold mining and recycling can have. It integrates concepts and terminology from earlier in the course into real-world situations and personal decision making. This exercise is set up as a small-group jigsaw activity.

Educators and students are excited and interested in learning about climate change, but many times we hear that they don’t know where to start. This series of videos was created by Dr. Kat Huybers, a glaciologist at the University of Washington. Dr. Huybers guides learners through four topics, including the following: It’s Warming, It’s Us, It’s Bad, and We Can Fix It. While watching these videos, the accompanying questions will guide learners in thinking critically about their relationship with climate change and also expose them to additional resources to deepen their understanding. These videos may work well as asynchronous foundational learning before a synchronous workshop.

The purpose of activity reflections is to encourage graduate students to become involved in academic and professional communities. By engaging in their field of study outside of the classroom environment, they are able to: introduce themselves in different situations, build academic and professional relationships, connect issues that they learn in the classroom to current discourse, and use reflection techniques to refine their academic and professional goals. Created by Steven Harris-Scott, Ph.D., and Amy Lewis, Ed.D., for INTO George Mason University with support from Mason 4-VA.

In this project, students will start by discussing the strengths and weaknesses of existing activity trackers and determining the variables that affect the accuracy of these trackers. Students will then conduct interviews with people who wear activity trackers or wear a tracker themselves for a week to determine the pros, cons, and accuracies of the trackers. Then, codes and algorithms will be used to determine what should count as the threshold for a step to achieve maximum tracker accuracy by using Sparkfun Inventor's Kit, Raspberry Pi, and Linux.

This is a technology-dependent lesson that students can guide at their own pace of exploration and learning. Students share what they learn through the use of Twitter (or alternative classroom sharing medium like TodaysMeet). The use of a social sharing platform like Twitter gives students a place for sharing with a wider audience, for more effective means of communication with each other, for incorporating viewpoints from all students in the classroom, and a means to reference thinking and learning by the use of a hashtag at a later time. Students will understand the role the Allied Air Forces played in the Normandy Invasion. Teachers can use this as a stand-alone lesson or offer more structure by guiding students through each source, one by one. Teachers may learn more about the Eighth Air Force by accessing the ABMC’s Strategic Bombing Campaign Interactive.
