We live on the continent of North America and in the great country of the United States. The United States is split into five different regions. In this seminar you will learn about the five regions and their characteristics.Standards7.1.4.B Describe and locate places and regions as defined by physical and human features.

This task is intended to help model a concrete situation with geometry. Placing the seven pennies in a circular pattern is a concrete and fun experiment which leads to a genuine mathematical question: does the physical model with pennies give insight into what happens with seven circles in the plane?

This introduction to motion activity has students exploring speed and acceleration using a wheeled office chair and rope to pull a student a given distance and record the time. The results are graphed and different outcomes are predicted when variables are changed.

After a brief history of plastics, students look more closely as some examples from the abundant types of plastics found in our day-to-day lives. They are introduced to the mechanical properties of plastics, including their stress-strain relationships, which determine their suitability for different industrial and product applications. These physical properties enable plastics to be fabricated into a wide range of products. Students learn about the different roles that plastics play in our lives, Young's modulus, and the effects that plastics have on our environment. Then students act as industrial engineers, conducting tests to compare different plastics and performing a cost-benefit analysis to determine which are the most cost-effective for a given application, based on their costs and measured physical properties.

This course will begin with brief overview of what important current research topics are in oceanography (physical, geological, and biological) and how acoustics can be used as a tool to address them. Three typical examples are climate, bottom geology, and marine mammal behavior. Will then address the acoustic inverse problem, reviewing inverse methods (linear and nonlinear) and the combination of acoustical methods with other measurements as an integrated system. Last part of course will concentrate on specific case studies, taken from current research journals. This course is taught on campus at MIT and with simultaneous video at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

This book is about how to read, use, and create maps. Our exploration of maps will be informed by a contextual understanding of how maps reflect the relationship between society and technology, and how mapping is an essential form of scientific and artistic inquiry. We will also explore how mapping is used to address a variety of societal issues, such as land use planning and political gerrymandering. You will gain insight into the technical underpinnings of mapping as a science approach, complement on-going interest and activities, or provide an applied focus for research or policy.

This OLogy activity uses the traditional Japanese art of paper-folding to help kids understand dimensions. The activity begins with a brief introduction to both dimensions and origami. The kids are then given instructions, included as printable PDFs, for morphing 2D paper into 3D models (a simple box and a water bomb). The activity ends with an illustrated look at dimensions, from the zero dimensions of a point to the fourth dimension of time.

The Integrated Data Viewer (IDV) is a software framework for analyzing and visualizing geoscience data sets collected by the Unidata Program. The IDV may be used to display and analyze satellite imagery, gridded data, surface observations, balloon soundings, radar data and more. Most of the data are provided in real time or near-real time. The IDV can display data anywhere on the globe with a wide selection of map projections and map backgrounds including a 3D spherical globe. Over 20 kinds of 2D and 3D data displays allow users to create cross-sections, profiles, animations and value read-outs of multi-dimensional data sets. A useful feature of the site is the ability to save displays in "bundle" files for use in classroom and lab exercises. Thorough and easy-to-follow directions for IDV installation and use are provided and annual training workshops are offered by Unidata. The data viewer is available for a free download, and data sets are available to participants who are affiliated with a degree-granting institution or a non-profit institution with an education and/or research mission. This resource is part of the Using Data collection. http://serc.carleton.edu/usingdata/

Students use miniature explosives to analyze actions and reactions. An Alka-seltzer tablet is sealed in a small film canister with water which sets up a pressure explosion pushing the canister one direction and an adjacent film canister in the opposite direction. Students repeat this set up but vary the mass of the second canister by adding sand. The distances that each canister travels is measured, recorded and later analyzed and discussed.
