English Description:
In this module, students explore and experience the utility of analyzing algebra and geometry challenges through the framework of coordinates. The module opens with a modeling challenge, one that reoccurs throughout the lessons, to use coordinate geometry to program the motion of a robot that is bound within a certain polygonal region of the plane—the room in which it sits. To set the stage for complex work in analytic geometry (computing coordinates of points of intersection of lines and line segments or the coordinates of points that divide given segments in specific length ratios, and so on), students will describe the region via systems of algebraic inequalities and work to constrain the robot motion along line segments within the region.

In this seminar you will look at the commutative, associative, and distributive properties to better understand how they are used in mathematics. You may see some similarities among these properties, but you will find large differences as well. These differences are important to recognize when completing problems, or else you will find yourself getting wrong answers. You will also explore identity and inverses, which are used so often in math (often without your even knowing it!).  A majority of the time will be spent on the distributive property as it tends to be the property used most moving forward in math. Understanding these basic number properties is important in working with numbers and equations later in the course.StandardsCC.2.2.HS.D.2Write expressions in equivalent forms to solve problems.

OER Curriculum guide: Adult Secondary level: Algebra and functions

Based on the College and Career Readiness Standards in Action- 25% of higher level math instruction should be spent on Algebra and Functions. This includes Interpreting quadratic equations, using their structure to rewrite them in equivalent forms which serve a purpose. Also creating and solving quadratic equations to solve problems, both algebraically and graphically. They are to be able to re-arrange formulas involving quadratics and highligh specific quantities. (Guide to Effectively Managing Higher-Level Content Standards in Mathematics.)The amount of OER material available to assist instruction in higher level EFL math for adults is numerous, but searching for it often gets one tangled in the pedigogical instruction, with simplistic "real-life" examples, whereas adults with REAL "real-life" experience can appreciate the topics applied to broader world examples. This curriculum guide will give suggestions  for pre-lesson activities to stimulate prior knowledge, walk you through a lesson example, and hopefully whet your appetite for using OER's in your regular instruction.

In this seminar you will learn how to solve single step equations. You will apply techniques you have learned regarding addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You will use the techniques learned in this seminar to verify solutions to various other types of problems as you move forward and solve for missing variables. When solving single step equations, you will use inverse operations to find missing variables and then use substitution to check each problem to verify that your answer is correct.StandardsCC.2.2.HS.D.8Apply inverse operations to solve equations or formulas for a given variable.

College Algebra 2e provides a comprehensive exploration of algebraic principles and meets scope and sequence requirements for a typical introductory algebra course. The modular approach and richness of content ensure that the book addresses the needs of a variety of courses. College Algebra 2e offers a wealth of examples with detailed, conceptual explanations, building a strong foundation in the material before asking students to apply what they’ve learned.

The College Algebra 2e revision focused on improving relevance and representation as well as mathematical clarity and accuracy. Introductory narratives, examples, and problems were reviewed and revised using a diversity, equity, and inclusion framework. Many contexts, scenarios, and images have been changed to become even more relevant to students’ lives and interests. To maintain our commitment to accuracy and precision, examples, exercises, and solutions were reviewed by multiple faculty experts. All improvement suggestions and errata updates from the first edition were considered and unified across the different formats of the text.
